UN:Me: A Psychological Horror That Blends Survival Horror with Social Deduction Mechanics

The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed several intriguing future games, but one in particular has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure seems to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.

"It's a unique game where a girl harboring multiple personalities within her must escape from a labyrinth of the mind," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Fractured Mind

In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of high school age. Within her reside four distinct personas, all possessing their own anxieties and drives. These entities can seize control at will, releasing their deep-seated phobias upon her without warning.

Judging by revealed gameplay, much of the narrative unfolds within a eerie hospital, though other scenes show the main character exploring a abandoned chapel.

A World of Personal Horror

"What makes you afraid of? What causes you uncomfortable?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. Authority figures. Elements that seem trivial to others can activate a deep instinct within us. This game explores that concept — anxieties that are unique to each person."

The core mechanic involves managing whichever soul surfaces at a particular time. However, these souls will change against your will during gameplay. While exploring, each soul's fears become exaggerated and assault the protagonist in succession. As the persona shifts, so does the particular terror the player experiences.

Unsettling Aesthetics and a Deadly Decision

At first glance, UN:Me shares noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is populated by orderlies all sporting the identical visage, with unnervingly wide smiles. Figures in the waiting room have enormous blooms where their heads are. Flowers are an ever-present theme, contrasting natural beauty with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls haunting the heroine is the "true" one. "Each of the personas claims that the physical form belongs to them," explains a creator. "During the game, you need to figure out who is real."

Once players have deduced a soul is an impostor, they must eliminate it. However, since each soul can lie or hide the truth, it is very easy to make a mistake.

"Perhaps you've already eliminated the real [soul] by your own actions," the narration suggests. "The final entity standing might be a fake. In any case, your decisions are irreversible."

UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced release date, but it is can be wishlist on digital storefronts.
