On his first day in office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “transform” the metropolis, declaring “a different age” and an audacious beginning to his tenure.

An Unprecedented Figure

The young figure, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A moment like this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the citizens whose grasp the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani stated.

Defying suggestions to temper hopes, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will rule expansively and audaciously.”

Adhering to Socialist Convictions

Mamdani openly embraced his socialist politics. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not compromise my ideals for concern of being called radical,” he said to an enthusiastic response.

The ceremony was a two-part event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over political establishments.

An Ambitious Platform

Mamdani now faces one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a plan promising:

• Subsidized daycare
• Fare-free public buses
• A halt to rent increases for approximately 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion expense of these services may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing Political Headwinds

The new mayor will deal with skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past tweets.

Mamdani has attempted to ease these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was described as unexpectedly cordial.

The Core Challenges of Governing

Ultimately, New York mayors are judged on their ability in providing city upkeep: trash collection, reducing the rat infestation, repairing roadways, and making sure reliable transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's public safety record, pointing to record low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with murders reported.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his speech with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
