Profound Upheaval Ahead: Britain's Direst Global Warming Outcomes Laid Bare by Experts

The direst possible consequences of the climate crisis for the UK have been detailed by scientists, including a scorching 4C increase in temperatures to a 6.5-foot increase in sea level. An alternative projection foresees a drop of 6C in temperature following the collapse of key Atlantic Ocean currents, which would massively disrupt agriculture and energy demand.

Plausible Outcomes, Not Forecasts

These impacts, certain ones are linked to climate tipping points, are considered as unlikely but plausible. The scientists stated that these projections filled a gap in planning that had left the UK not ready for worst-case results.

"The worst-case scenarios we have outlined aren’t predictions, but they are plausible," stated Nigel Arnell who directed the analysis. "The UK has been planning lacking the methods to test against extreme possibilities. We've now given decision-makers what they need to plan for future conditions they wish to avoid, but must not overlook."

A Suite of Harsh Climate Scenarios

A further series of dire projections maps the projected severity of harsh climate between now and the close of the 2100s. These suggest that temperatures could skyrocket in certain periods by up to 6C above the norm, while precipitation could be triple standard measurements.

The probability of the extreme scenarios coming to pass cannot be precisely determined due to uncertainty about what steps will be enacted to combat global heating and how the planet's climate will respond. This research was likened to defence planning or scenario planning for economic stability.

Major Scenario Highlights

  • 4C Temperature Rise: Planetary heating exceeding 4C by 2100 could transpire if international cooperation breaks down or if powerful amplifying effects including the Amazon rainforest dying emit its vast reserves of carbon. This would result in severe and lengthy heat domes and dry spells hitting the UK in summer.
  • Ocean Circulation Failure: A key circulation system, the North Atlantic current, is weakening and becoming unstable due to climate change. A complete failure commencing by 2030 would lead to a 6C cooling in the UK. "Crop production would face immense difficulties and water supplies would be completely altered," said the lead researcher.
  • Sudden Ocean Inundation: A rise of 2.0-2.2 metres around the UK by 2100 could occur if ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica collapse rapidly, flooding low-lying areas. In contrast to the other scenarios, this possibility is already known by coastal engineers.
  • Clean Air Warming: Global averages could also be pushed higher by about 0.75C if airborne particulates is drastically reduced. This counterintuitive effect occurs because pollution particles from burning coal reflect solar radiation from reaching the ground.

Planning for the Worst

The severe models could be used to inform the development of critical national infrastructure, including expanded cities, nuclear power stations and urban drainage systems. Awareness of these environmental threats could also speed the push to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The analysis developed the worst-case scenarios using a mix of observed and historical experience, digital projections and established principles. The scenarios exclude broader worldwide issues including the global food shortages and increased conflict.

The project was requested as part of a government’s adaptation planning initiative. Earlier reports have warned that not enough attention was being allocated to high-consequence, low-probability risks.

Official experts has recommended that the UK must "adapt to 2C" and examine the dangers for four degrees. Past policy documents have been described as being "inadequate" by some observers.

A government spokesperson noted: "Global warming is at the core of the country's focus, both building resilience and becoming a clean energy superpower. It is crucial that the UK is ready for the impacts."
